after an extensive search, in came Craig Simpson, a two-time Stanley Cup winner who has played with Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, boasts extensive broadcast experience with Fox and Sportsnet, and a history with our longtime Play-by-Play man Jim Hughson. With our new goal of creating a new authentic hockey title we had to change the direction of the Play-by-Play and Color Commentary, and get back to true hockey commentary. There was no middle ground, you loved it, or you hated it. but the true grit, hard core hockey fans hated it. Humor would provide a broader appeal, for the most part we were right, young gamers, and new fans reacted very positively to the new style of commentary. We had experimented for a few years with "Entertainment" and appealing to new gamers, with a slapstick audio presentation. Are you talkin' to me? At the beginning of the year, our new team had a common goal: "Authentic Hockey". Add in major improvements to the Ice, such as reflections, deterioration, shadows, and a lot of little details, the Arenas had a whole new feel. Again Black Box technology stepped in, with a new 3D crowd that could react to the game, and bring the authentic environment to life.

I mean flat, wafer thin, cardboard cutouts of fans. Although we had nicely detailed crowds, if you moved around them you quickly realized how flat they were. we quickly also realized that the crowd needed some help. We then reworked nearly every conceivable visual detail - from cyber-scaped player models, to more detailed jerseys, and authentic player equipment from the top manufacturers such as Jofa, CCM, Koho, Itech and Bauer - this year's players will stand out in a crowd. As luck would have it, Black Box had some technology that would allow us to have the most lifelike players yet, 7-800 players later that would be taken care of. The heads and faces of the NHL players first and foremost really needed some attention. Overall we knew we had to improve in all areas, but a few things that stood out were first in line. What are you lookin' at? With the gameplay group hard at work planning out their strategies, the area NHL games in the past had been praised for, the visuals, needed some close scrutiny. This time, we'll dig into the insanely deep new dynasty mode, online play, graphics and more.
NHL 2004 REBUILT DYNASTY SERIES
Last time, we talked about how the development team revamped nearly every aspect of NHL 2004's gameplay - bringing the series back to a more simulation-style "gloves-off hockey" experience.
